Marma
The body is filled with energy channels called ‘nadis’ and energy centers called ‘marma’. These are points on the body that contain concentrated life force or ‘prana’. Prana is the vibrant electromagnetic energy of nature that moves through these energy channels. There are thousands of Marmani, but 107 specific marma points are therapeutically used. It can be compared to a necklace, with the nadis being the string and the marma the pearls.
The word ‘marma’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘mrung’ or ‘marane’. ‘Marane’ means ‘death’, ‘mrung’ means ‘close to death’. Meaning that these points are crucial for our well being. If certain points are injured, hit or blocked, it can result in serious health problems or even death.
Marma points can also become blocked and interrupt the flow of energy in the body. They can be seen as switches that allow the energy to flow when they are opened. When blocked it’s not possible for the prana to flow and certain parts will be depleted of energy. Removing blockages and opening these points is the purpose of marma treatment, so the energy can move freely again through the muscles, joints and organs.

Ayurveda
Marma is a healing treatment from the traditional health science of India, called Ayurveda. The World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledges Ayurveda as the world’s oldest scientific and holistic health system. In Sanskrit, the word Ayurveda means ‘the science of life’ (ayur means ‘long life’ or ‘life’ and veda means ‘science’ or ‘knowledge’).
The wisdom of Ayurveda was passed on orally until it was put down in writing more than 5000 years ago just like Yoga and Vedanta. The oldest known texts about Ayurveda are the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and the Ashtanga Hrudaya. The texts describe in detail the effects of the five elements in the cosmic system – earth, water, fire, air and ether – on our individual system and explain the need to keep these elements balanced for a healthy and happy life. The power of good health lies in this balance that is achieved through means and principles from nature.
