Meditation evening
Once per month on a Friday evening, a moment to sit with awareness in silence.
Close the week in peace with meditation to give yourself some time to be, to reconnect and allow the body and mind to relax.
It’s normal that we’re mainly busy working, planning and socializing. Our minds are made to do this and it’s a valuable tool. But our minds can ‘crash’ (just like a computer) if we overuse it, never allowing it to take a break and rest. To always be busy thinking and doing can cause stress, anxiety, irritation, restlessness, trouble sleeping, digestive problems, short temper and many more likewise problems. Just like the body needs rest to restore, heal and reenergize the mind does too.
There many ways in how to do this. Think of sports, reading a book, taking a nice long walk, doing yoga and so on. Yet there’s something different with being present with yourself in silence. It’s when we take time to sit down and doing ‘nothing’ a lot starts to happen. In the beginning instead of silence, the mind starts to wander continuously “what am I doing?”, “when am I done?”, “my knee hurts, I want to move”, “I shouldn’t forget to send that email”, grocery shopping lists appear, appointments to plan, conversations to be held and all the other worries will keep the mind occupied.
This may be uncomfortable and restless in the beginning, but normal to anyone who starts with a meditation practice. A misconception is that this always wandering of the mind shouldn’t be happening and that we have to attain an ‘empty mind’. Nothing is more true.
With the practice of meditation we learn to observe this continuous flow of thoughts. It’s not so much about not having them, but learning to watch them instead of always reacting and interfering with these thoughts. Once we succeed in doing this a sense of control and peace enters the body and mind. We create space for ourselves to step away from all the ‘drama’ and get a better understanding for what is. This gives opportunities to grow, learn and being a better person for ourselves and others. A very important step in taking better care and creating a healthy lifestyle.
Coming together to sit in silence gives great support on your meditation journey. No direct distractions from home and a serene space only for the practice of self development with likeminded people deepens the practice.
